Personally Proven Health Benefits of Fish Oil for Dogs Plus Personal Instructions on How to Give It

nature made fish oil for dogs

Fish oil has been an in-demand supplement for many health-conscious individuals these days. With so many health benefits, it’s not even surprising to find the supplement being used on pets, too.

In case you’re not buying the idea, here are a few good reasons to convince you to give fish oils to your dogs- based on personal experience.

Shinier Coat

Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids that can tame the inflammatory processes happening in your dog’s body. By controlling inflammation, it can also help address skin allergies that are often accompanied by scratching, itching, and hair loss. These things don’t only affect the way your dog’s coat appears, but they can also be highly uncomfortable.

However, although helpful, you still shouldn’t give fish oil to your dogs immediately- unless you’re sure they aren’t allergic to fish. One of our golden retrievers, Archer, experienced some shedding after taking the supplement.

Better cognitive function

Supplementing your dog’s diet with fish oil can increase his ability to learn new skills and retain information. It works wonders not only for puppies but older dogs with cognitive dysfunctions, too. Our dogs became more alert and responsive during training periods after giving them fish oil supplements.

One particular study involving 142 old dogs reflected this fish oil benefit. The dogs showed various behavior issues, including impaired activity levels, irregular sleeping patterns, and impaired house training skills. After giving them DHA-supplemented food for around 60 days, those dogs showed an immense improvement in several behavior categories.

Improved quality of life

Dogs who consume fish oil regularly have been found to have longer lifespans. One of the main reasons for this is the supplement’s ability to reduce the body's inflammatory proteins. When there are fewer inflammatory substances, there are fewer chances for high blood pressure, kidney failure, and cardiovascular diseases from happening.

And it’s not only suitable for prevention. In fact, fish oil works wonders in relieving existing arthritic pain. It can decrease the production of prostaglandin, which triggers joint pain. As for heart diseases, fish oil works as an anticoagulant, preventing blood clots from developing.

It can also prevent irregular heartbeat and lower your dog’s blood triglyceride and cholesterol levels. These properties make fish oil a vital part of the treatment plan for critically ill dogs suffering from inflammation of the pancreas and bowel.

Our dogs aren’t showing these concerns yet, but we decided to supplement their diet with fish oil for preventive measures. You don’t have to wait for your dog to be critically ill before you start paying more attention to their health.

Be Cautious When Using Fish Oil

To ensure your dog’s well-being, you must pay extra attention to the supplements you add to his diet. Since not all fish oils are created with the same quality, do your homework first. Researching and weighing your options can help you pick only the best one for your dogs.

Another critical thing to remember regarding fish oil supplements is to ask your veterinarian first. Determining your pet’s allergies and the proper dosage can help prevent adverse reactions. Too much of anything can cause severe damage- even if they’re just fish oil supplements.

I've been giving ALL my dogs a combination of fish oil and vitamin e supplements for 20 years now. You're definitely right, this is really effective in improving their health and coat. I'm really glad that we're on the same page.
